What do you do at AngelHack?
I am responsible for setting up Eventbrite pages for series events. Ticket refunds, website modifications, and ambassador support (when they need help).
Can you tell us about your toughest day on the job?
My toughest day on the job would be the time when there were a lot of hackathons held during the same weekend. I say it’s tough because it's the busiest, but I am happy when I'm busy! :)
AngelHack is a global company, requiring frequent travel. You must have had some memorable experiences. Give us one!
This is my second year at AngelHack, this year I went to my first hackathon event in Davao. It was very interesting, and a ton of fun! I wanted to see more, and help bring more to the Philippines!
Has there ever been a time you felt discriminated against as a woman? Explain.
Yes, when I was in college during my freshmen year our batch was the pioneering students for BSIT. My course (BS in Information Technology) was under the College of Engineering, and mostly dominated by male students and faculty. Someone told me I wouldn’t make it through to the finish line with my course since most of the graduates under the Engineering College are mostly male and good in math and analysis. But then, I was challenged to pursue my course and tried my best and ended up as one of the best students!
What challenges have you faced because of being a female at a hackathon or in business?
Well I only have a few hackathons attended so I have a limited experience. But based on observation, some people don’t take you seriously when you are a woman in our field until you prove something.
What about the startup culture do you like?
Honestly, I am a newbie in this field. AngelHack is an eye opener for me for a Startup company. I heard about Startup companies from the tv, internet but not experience it, and it feels different when you're actually involved. Even though my job is just a small part, I am very happy that I am involved with AngelHack.
What about the startup culture do you dislike?
So far, nothing.
How does it feel that 80% of your community is male based?
It feels ok, but it makes me wonder, why? Women hold a lot of potential. What men do, women can too! And it makes me want to share and encourage women in our community to be more aware and engage in these events and encourage them to join.
Tell us about your everyday life.
I have 7 dogs. I'm an only child. I love to travel.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, that's why I am so proud to be a part of AngelHack because through AngelHack I can share to my fellow ITs and others that there are events like this that they can showcase their ideas! And because I work online, I can also inspire others not to give up hope when they can’t get an actual job in the office, they can try to practice their skills and try their luck to work online, as a developer, designer, assistant & etc.
What do you love about working for AngelHack?
I love AngelHack!!
Their whole mission, how they bring tech events to countries/cities like the Philippines, that are lacking in events like this. They are giving potential developers, designers, like me, a chance to showcase what they got and improve more. I love that our hackathons have participants with all ages, composed of men, women, young & adults.
I also love working at AngelHack because of my colleagues; they are fun, passionate, dedicated, and hard working and it inspires me to work harder. And my boss, Sabeen, you can see and feel how passionate she is with this, she is amazzzing!
What’s your spirit animal?
Bear. Because, bears are symbolic of strength and courage and still grounded with nature. And, I want to believe that I am standing for myself and my family and I am their strength.
What’s one word you would use to describe yourself?
Persistent.
What’s your favorite thing in the world?
Coffee, does that count?
Biggest fear?
Fear of disappointment.
What’s your definition of success?
Success is achieving something and being happy with it.
